If you run a small shop and you’ve been putting off filing your taxes because it just sounded too complicated – stop scrolling, because the wait is over.
FBR has officially activated the Original Income Tax Return for Small Shopkeepers under the Tajir Dost / SRO 1166 framework, and it’s live on IRIS right now for Tax Year 2026, with a filing deadline of 30th September 2026.
We told you this was coming. Now it’s real, it’s simple, and in this blog we’re going to walk you through exactly what the return looks like – picture by picture – so you know precisely what to expect before you sit down to file.
A Quick Recap: Why This Return Exists
Under SRO 1166, FBR carved out a separate, simplified return specifically for small retailers and shopkeepers – the people running a single counter, a general store, a kiryana shop, or a small service outlet – instead of forcing them through the same lengthy return meant for large businesses and corporations.
The whole idea is simple: fewer fields, fewer confusions, faster filing.
Step 1: The Declaration (Half Naama)
Before anything else, the system asks you to confirm – with a simple checklist – that you actually qualify for this simplified return. You’re declaring that:
- Your income comes from a small shop.
- You don’t run jewellery or provide professional/vocational services through the shop.
- Your declared turnover hasn’t crossed Rs. 200 million in the current or the last three tax years.
- You are not a Tier-1 retailer.
If all four boxes genuinely apply to you, you tick “Confirm” and move on.

Step 2: Business Details
Next, the form asks for the basics about your business:
- Nature of business – selected from a dropdown (general store / kiryana / facility store, etc.)
- Business address – including a map pin, so make sure you drop it accurately, since FBR uses this for verification.
This section is short by design – no lengthy business classification codes, no jargon.
Step 2 ā Business details
Step 3: Income and Tax Details
This is the heart of the return, and it’s where most shopkeepers were worried they’d get stuck. In practice, it’s just a handful of numbers:
- Annual sales
- Annual purchases
- Net profit from the shop (calculated automatically once you enter sales and purchases)
- Total tax (auto-computed based on your profit)
- Tax already paid (any advance tax already collected from you during the year, e.g. via electricity bills)
- Balance tax payable with the return
The system does the heavy lifting here – you enter turnover figures, and it calculates the rest for you. No manual tax-slab lookups required.
Step 3 ā Income and tax details
Step 4: Statement of Assets & Liabilities
Finally, you provide a simple wealth snapshot for the year:
- Business capital
- Cash in hand
- Immovable property, bank balances, vehicle, other assets (toggle Yes/No and fill in as applicable)
- Total liabilities
The system then auto-calculates your net assets for the current year, and asks for last year’s net assets for comparison, giving you a clean, reconciled wealth statement without needing an accountant to build it from scratch.
Step 4 ā Assets and liabilities
Why This Matters for You
- No more excuses. The “it’s too complicated” argument doesn’t hold anymore, this is a four-step form you can realistically finish in one sitting.
- Being on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) protects you from higher withholding tax rates on banking transactions, property purchases, vehicle registration, and more.
- It’s a legal shield. Filing on time keeps you clear of penalties and notices down the road.
- The clock is ticking. With the deadline set for 30th September 2026, the smart move is to file early, not in the last-week rush when the IRIS portal typically slows down under load.
Final Word
FBR built this return specifically so that small shopkeepers like you don’t need to file a lengthy & complicated tax return or lose a day standing in a tax office. Four short steps, straightforward numbers you already know from your own shop register, and you’re compliant for the year.
